The trend over the past decade or so has been to avoid using carpet in the home altogether, many will prefer to rip out a wall to wall carpet and instead replace with hardwood flooring or tile. While still others, simply claim to not like the look or feel of carpeting in their home.
But, the reality is, carpeting has come a long way, both in materials and design, and it can be used as a wonderful element in the home that will create a lasting look for years to come.
And, the best part about carpet? It can be replaced! The second it begins to look a bit dingy, or out of style, simply by a new one, it’s as easy as that.
There are actually a number of ways to effectively use carpet as a design element in your home, with great success. Let’s take a look at a few of the ways to do it.
One major benefit of using a throw or area carpet is that it can really warm up a room. This is especially true for those who love the look and feel of a modern design. The risk that can be run with having modern furnishings is that the space can be left looking a bit cold.
That is where a rug comes into play, a nice shaggy rug can give the impression of warmth, without detracting from the overall modern look and feel.
Another area where a great rug can have a brilliant effect is in using it for pops of colour. This is totally true in places like rented flats where a landlord might prohibit painting the walls. Instead of having a dull room that is just white, use a rug to infuse colour into the space.
A colourful rug can truly be it’s own statement and gives you the opportunity to accent the room with bits of colour from the rug in throw pillows, vases, or other accessories, without having to spend a fortune on paint and coloured furnishings.
Another area where a carpet or rug can shine is to provide an interesting texture to a room. All too often, when decorating, we can cover all of the basics like colours and sheens but forget just how important texture can be to the overall look to the room.
This is especially true if your furnishings are all of a similar fabric, or are constructed from the same material. A great carpet can add in a new look for the eye and really complete the feel of the room.
