If you work in an office, you probably have gotten into a bad mood at one time or another.  Perhaps you even work amongst co-workers who can be grumpy.  Unfortunately, often the workplace can drag people down and keep them from feeling happy.  Many office environments seem very institutional.  In fact, they commonly have dreary and drab environments.  However, studies show that people who feel uplifted during the workday are actually more productive and creative.

Here are some ideas for improving your mood at the office.

1.    Get some art and photos

If possible, it is a good idea to place beautiful and peaceful art on the walls of your office. Art can do a great deal to improve the general ambiance and vibe of your surroundings.

If you haven’t considered placing photos of your loved ones on your desk, you should definitely think about doing so.  Being surrounded by your family’s happy faces during the workday can do a lot to keep you motivated and focused.

2.    Plants

People sometimes get depressed at work because they feel so removed from nature if they are “stuck” in an office building.  For this reason, it is a good idea to surround yourself with plants.  You can choose plants that come in sizes both small and large.

If you have a windowsill, this is the perfect spot to place some small potted plants.  You may even consider buying a nice coffee table for your office and placing photos and plants on it.   Keeping your office “green” will make it more habitable.

3.    Eat healthy fruits and vegetables

Another potential contributing factor towards people feeling unhappy at work is that they are making the wrong food choices.  For example, snacks from the vending machine may taste good, but they can also cause quick highs and lows in your energy.  If you eat a candy bar, you may immediately get a sugar rush, but this is usually followed by a crash where you feel tired and depleted.  Think ahead and prepare fresh fruits and vegetables to take with you to work. Your body will definitely thank you because produce can keep you full of energy and increase your stamina as well.

4.    Listen to Music

You may not be able to play music out loud in your office, but with certain types of jobs it is not a problem to bring headphones and listen to mp3s during the day.  Music is quite useful for elevating your mood.

5.    Use the best office furniture

It should come as no surprise that a painful uncomfortable office chairs can quickly ruin your mood.  In fact, you may have a dreadful chair and not even give it a second thought because you are so accustomed to it.  Take a look at your office chair and consider whether or not this chair is compromising your mood.

These days there are a wide variety of ergonomic chairs that will keep your back and neck feeling good.  These types of chairs have lumbar support that is ideal for maintaining a good posture while you work.  You will feel happier and most productive when you are not slumped over at your desk.

Many people fall into bad habits at work and don’t even realize that these choices are making them feel depressed.  Remember that you want to constantly monitor your mood.  If you find that you are feeling down, start trying to incorporate these types of positive changes into your workday.
