A Greasy Affair

Kitchen work can often be greasy work. You need to grease the pan to prevent the food from sticking, to need to add oil to the cake so it will be moist, oil is a kitchen must; but it can also be rather hazardous. Oil is slick, not always visible, and sometimes hard to clean up. Here are some things to consider if you are the owner of oil and have a kitchen in your home.

If you are cooking with hot oil in a pan of any sort you want to exercise great caution. Always have a lid or mesh screen over the pan. This will minimize the amount of oil that spatters out of the pan and protect your hands and arms while you are cooking. Also always keep the handle of the pan turned in toward a wall so that no one will accidently knock the pan from the stove. Grease burns are quite nasty, but avoidable if you are cautious.

When you are using a pan spray, spray the pan while holding it in the sink or dishwasher. Doing this will keep excess grease in the dishwasher or sink where it will be washed away. No one is likely to slip on grease if it is confined to those two areas.

If you have greasy counter tops or floors you will have to use a soapy solution to get the grease up off the surface. A disinfectant is good and should be used on counter tops, but if there is not a grease cutting agent in the spray then you will disinfect your grease but not remove it.

Rugs can also be helpful in reducing greasy accidents. A small throw rug in front of the oven and counters may help to absorb any oil that misses its mark. While this will give you grimy rugs after a spell, it will keep your floors from developing slick spots that could cause a fall. You will simply have to wash your rugs on a regular basis.
