A Warm Basement

Basements can be a wonderful part of any home, but often they are neglected and uninviting. Dark, narrow stairs, exposed insulation, and unfinished floors often plague basements, which are a secret source of additional living space. Beyond extra storage space, basements are excellent places for romp rooms, especially if you have young children or teenagers.

One of the more essential steps to preparing your basement for living is to make sure that it is properly heated. In the summer basement heat is of no concern, but come winter it will become mighty cold down there. Many home re-model experts will agree that the best and easiest way to warm your basement is by adding baseboard heating. Although not very practical for heating a whole home, baseboard heat is perfect for basements.

Baseboard heaters are designed to heat the air that is close to the floor, which will eventually force it to rise to the top of the room, forcing the cool air down to be heated. As long as your basement does not have vaulted ceilings, the circulation of warm air should be efficient. Also if your basement has multiple rooms, you can have heaters in each room and turn them on as needed.

In recent years, baseboard heaters have come a long way. They may still crackle a little when they first come on, but they are definitely more attractive and efficient than they use to be. Just like many other appliances on the market, space heaters have energy efficient models that will allow you to heat your basement while not overspending on your power bill. Most of the new models come with thermostats that will go off when the optimal temperature is reached. Some also feature safety devices that will turn the heater off should something fall or be placed in front of the heater, therefore lowering fire risk.
