Clutter is the kill joy of many desks the world over…mine included. The papers, envelops, pens, and random objects seem to gravitate to your desk like a magnet no matter how often and thoroughly you straighten your desk. The best way that I have found to combat this relentless agent of mess is to compartmentalize things.
Having separate spaces for everything may seem a little over the top, but when the end is a clean, clutter free desk, I consider any effort worth while. The first and most helpful step is often to get a file cabinet and paper shredder. Create file names for the important papers that you want to keep and then shred the rest. The shredder is also a good security measure as you can shred anything with important information that you do not wish other to have.
Drawer dividers or a small set of drawers that sit on your desk are the next most helpful item. Drawers are indispensible for holding, stowing and even hiding all those little things that find their way on to your desk. With a divider, you can create spaces for paper clips, rubber bands, staples, brads or whatever. I also firmly believe in one small junk drawer, because no matter how organized you are you will always have random things that don’t seem to belong anywhere.
Pen/Pensile holders are also very handy and you can use something as simple as an old mug, which will also give your office a personal touch and save you money. These holders are also great places for holding scissors, small rulers or letter openers. One final organizational item is a shelf or two. A large one for books and binders is always a must and a very small, wide one for your desk is also helpful for sorting out paper work that demands immediate attention.
