When it comes to eating with children, there is one universal, undeniable fact…children are messy eaters. They spill, they crumble, they splatter, they slurp and they splash. Eventually these messy eaters mature into less messier eaters but not for a great many years. If you have children in the house and you need a new dining table you will have to think seriously before any purchases are made.
One thing to consider is the size of the table. You table needs to be big enough to accommodate children in booster seats or high chairs. Another thing to think about is the actual height of the table and chairs. Bar style tables are very popular and trendy right now but they may not be the best things for children. The child has to climb up the chair, which does not make a sturdy climbing object, and then there is the risk of falling. Falling from a normal chair is no big deal, but the fall from bar style chair would hurt a lot more. So the bar style tables may not be the best family friendly choice for families with small children.
Also you need to consider the type of table you want. Glass topped tables are going to show everything. Your child will take no time at all in soiling the surface even if they are eating on a placemat. Tile tables are cool and definitely bring character to a room but cleaning crumbs out of the grout may be time consuming and challenging. The best tables to have when you have children are smooth, dark surface tables. They are will be easier to clean and will sometimes hid what you miss cleaning.
Chairs are the last important thing to consider. Do you buy chairs with cushions or without? The cushioned chairs will be more comfortable but may be harder to keep clean. Cushions can be vacuumed off easily enough, but if they are spilled on or have food mashed into them, cleaning them will be more of a challenge. The best kind of cushion will be one that can be removed and thrown into the washing machine. To avoid cushion cleaning of any kind, just get hard seated chairs.
