Using reclaimed wood is wonderful for the environment and your budget, but the average building supply store doesn’t generally have a large supply of this wood. So, if you want reclaimed wood for your project, you may have to do a little searching. There are different types of reclaimed wood so when you search be sure to be specific so that you can find exactly what you need for your project.
The first and easiest step is to search the internet. Look up reclaimed wood through a local listing and search through the results for locations in your area that sell the wood. Another option is Craig’s List. There are hundreds of free items being given away each day and some of them are unwanted building materials such as wood or bricks. These items usually go fast but they are worth the effort.
For the artistically talented, scavenging can be a fun was of stumbling onto some beautiful wood. Beaches are often littered with drift wood and forests are full of fallen trees. Before you do any scavenging, you should check with the local authorities to make sure that you do not need a permit. This is generally not the ideal way to get wood for building projects but may be ideal for smaller carving projects.
If your town has a second hand store dedicated solely to building material and housing needs, this is a great place to find not only wood but also tile, brick, linoleum, and glass. These stores are invaluable for remodelers as they provide unique building supplies at low prices. If you do not have a store like this in your home town, consider visiting construction sites where older homes or buildings are being disassembled. If you are bold enough, you may be able to have or purchase some of the wood that is being dismantled.
