Finding enough space for your home office might be a tricky proposition. Space is often a premium, especially in condo living and for those in large cities. In short, square footage or the lack of it can be a very big deal. But this doesn’t mean that you should simply place your office chairs and desk anywhere in your home that you like. Doing so, while tempting, may result in a seriously dysfunctional space that is not used to its full potential. Let’s take a look at a few ways that you can free up enough space so that having a home office is possible.
Get Organized and Create an Office Space
If you have limited space, it may seem impossible to find ways around having your home office merge with your bedroom, but there are strategies that you can use to avoid that option. After all, putting your computer chair and desk in your bedroom can quickly transform a restful environment to one that causes you stress. Who wants to look at their desk and computer when they first get up in the morning?
One smart move is to look at your use of all the rooms in your home. You may have a perfectly good room that is essentially used for little more than clutter. By throwing away and donating these used items and adding in some storage bookcases, you may very well be able to free up a great deal of space. Carefully analyze what all of your rooms are being used for.
Proper storage and utility racks can also serve to help you utilize such a space and, in the process, yield more floor space. In this way, you may be able to turn your storage room into your new office space. Additionally consider renting a storage area for unused items and boxes.
If All Else Fails…
If you have removed all of your unused items, gotten organized and still do not have enough space for a home office, then there are still some options. One is to simply buy room dividers and create your office space within a larger space. While not an optimal solution, it will effectively create a psychological boundary between your home office and the rest of the space it is nested within. Further, you will have the significant added benefit of not having to look at your office chairs, desk, computer and, most importantly, your paperwork!
