Although fast food, restaurants, and easy box meals have become a driving part of our diet, there are still some who use their kitchen as it was intended, for cooking. For those who do indulge in the glories of a homemade meal, there are several new and many old things that are essential to a user friendly kitchen. Here are some must have items that will not only make working in your kitchen easier, but safer too.
1. A spice rack- Having a spice rack on your counter or in a cupboard will make finding your favorite ingredients easier and quicker. A spice rack will also make your kitchen more organized and less cluttered.
2. A step stool- Step stools are a life saver, especially in a home where no one is tall. Having this little item stowed in a pantry or next to a fridge is very helpful and will negate the need of standing on counters of kitchen chairs to reach unreachable items.
3. Pot holders/trivets- Unless you intend on nursing many burns, pot holders must be present in your kitchen. While a kitchen towel will work in a pinch, they are often not thick enough and present a danger when dangled to close to heating elements. Pot holders and trivets will also prevent you from burning your counters and tables.
4. Tongs- You can never have too many sets of tongs in your house. Extra long tongs for the barbeque, long tongs for a pot full of hot pasta, and short ones for hot vegetables. Tongs are useful for hot or cold food and can pick up nearly anything in a pinch.
5. Non-toxic cleaners- Kitchens are hard to keep clean and sanitary, so it is always a good idea to keep a steady supply of kitchen cleaners on hand. For added safety purchase non-toxic cleaners especially if you have pets or children in your home.
