Some final options for renewable and eco friendly flooring.
Wool carpet- Wool carpet is a great renewable and eco friendly option for two reasons: first wool comes from sheep and you don’t have to kill them to get their coat; so year after year a fresh new wool coat is available for the taking; whether the sheep are agreeable to this is yet unknown. Second, most wool carpet is made without the use of harsh dyes and chemicals so as your carpet ages there won’t be anything seeping into the air. Also, wool carpet is great for anyone with allergies because it has the ability to absorb containments in the air. What is even better is that once the containments are absorbed, the carpet does not re-release them into the air, so all you have to do is vacuum the carpet.
P.E.T. Carpet- P.E.T. carpet is made from recycled plastic soda and water bottles. Polyethylene terephthalate, which is the material used to create most plastic bottles, is used to create a kind of synthetic polyester that is both soft and durable. The process starts with the bottles being sorted, cleaned and cut up in a recycling facility. The small, cut up fibers are then shipped to carpet manufactures in packages weighing over 1,000 pounds. Once at the carpet factory, the fibers are melted down and forced through a form that creates hair sized threads of polyester that when bunched together create a soft carpet. Carpet manufactures can use thousand of pounds of recycled bottles every year in the production of P.E.T. carpet. P.E.T. carpet is now thought to be superior to traditional nylon carpet because it is more resistant to stains and fading. Also fewer chemicals are needed in the production of P.E.T. carpet than in the production of nylon carpet. Additionally, the production of P.E.T. carpet produces fewer emissions than does the making of nylon carpet. Over all this is a great option for eco friendly carpet.
