Sitting at a desk in an office chair all day long can be hard on your body and mind. Your muscles can easily fall asleep or you can feel antsy and restless. These things can be easily remedied by walking about the office every so often and by stretching at your desk. Stretching will help to loosen tense muscles and ward off restless feelings.
Here are some simple stretches you can do while you work away in your office:
1. Hands- Since typing is an essential part of office work, it is important to stretch out your fingers. To begin you want to hold your hands straight out in front of you, next flex your fingers so that they are stiff (make sure that your hand are wrist are parallel), hold this stretch for several seconds. Next, keeping your fingers flexed, bend them at the knuckles (pretend you are playing animals with your children and you have to bear your claws like a lion), hold this stretch for several seconds and then relax your hands. Repeat this several times a day to ensure happy healthy hands.
2. Arms and Shoulders- This stretch is a simple one that many of us do without thinking. First extend your arms in font of you keeping them parallel with your shoulders. Next interlock your fingers together and turn your palms away from your face. Last straighten your arms completely and act like you’re reaching for something in front of you. Hold this for several seconds and repeat throughout the day.
3. Back- Back aches are one of the most common complaints when it comes to office discomfort. So to ease some of the tension in your lower back start by sitting up straight so that your back is not against the back of your chair. Next cross your left leg over the right. Place your right hand on your left knee and pull gently toward to the left and slowly rotate your head and shoulders to the left. Continue to rotate until you feel a gentle pull in your back and then hold the stretch for several seconds. Repeat exercise on opposite side.
