Talking Money

The most important decisions you will make when you are redecorating or remodeling your house will have to do with money. Lots of money will equal a less stressful decision process, while limited funding will equal creative thinking and compromising. Figuring out your budget before speaking to a designer or builder is a key step to ensuring a successful project. Here are some money matters to consider before sitting down and talk with a designer or builder.

1. Credit or Savings- Do you save up money and pay for your changes once your have all the needed cash or do you use a credit card? Saving money will save you from having to pay interest charges but you will have to wait longer. Using your credit card will allow you to make immediate changes but may tempt you to spend more than you can afford.

2. Increased Value- Will the changes you want to make increase the value of your home? This is a very important consideration, especially in this current housing market. Consider making only the changes that will increase your home value and appeal.

3. Other Financing- If you are making big changes like, like adding a bathroom or redoing the roof, you may need to consider other forms of financing. Personal bank loans are one option and as long as your have a good history with your bank this may be the best option since the interest rate will be lower than a credit card. Cashing out CD’s or borrowing against your retirement are also other options.

4. Living Expenses- You want to make sure that whatever your budget is and wherever the money is coming from that you don’t strain your cost of living budget. You should not have to sacrifice the electric bill and groceries just to have a nicer kitchen.
