Your Designers Portfolio

Just how carefully should you evaluate your designer’s portfolio anyway? Is it really a key factor in determining whether or not you should hire a given designer? The answer is surprisingly complicated. So sit back in your favorite office chair as we take a look at what you should expect out of a designer’s portfolio.

While there is no doubt that the quality of work that a designer is capable of doing will be represented in his or her portfolio, it does not tell the entire story. Even if there are before and after photos, you may still not get a feel for how dramatic of a change took place. There are other issues as well that impact design jobs as well, such as budgetary constraints, and the personality types of the various clients. In short, there is a long list of intangibles that one should take into consideration when looking at a designer’s portfolio.

It is true that a picture is worth a thousand words, but that does not mean that a picture or a handful of pictures can tell you everything you need to know about a designer. Consider for a moment how well you are able to interact with a designer. Are you able to easily communicate in a fashion that effectively conveys your ideas? This is an extremely important point and one that should not be overlooked. You can have the best designer in the world, but if he or she is unable to understand or relate to your needs, it is difficult to imagine that he or she will ultimately make you, the client, happy.

Another factor to be considered is as follows: How hard do you feel that a designer is willing to work to make you happy? In other words, does he or she really want the job? This is a sort of gut instinct kind of response in some cases, but often it will be obvious. It is possible that you will get a great deal more out of a motivated designer who really cares about the end design than you do from a very established designer who feels that they have little or nothing to prove.

Hiring a designer is no small decision. After all, you will have to live with the results of the designer’s work. If there are various elements that you do not like, you will have to go through considerable expense and hassle to fix them. Therefore, make sure that you do your best to make the right decision on a designer at the start of the project.
